Shopify Payment Processing Fees
Shopify has two ways to take payments: Shopify Payments (their built-in processor) and a third-party gateway (Stripe, PayPal, Authorize.net, etc.). The fee structure is the inverse of the marketing: Shopify Payments advertises a low card rate but locks you into their processor; third-party gateways cost more on Shopify's side but let you shop for processing elsewhere.
On Shopify Payments, the card rate varies by plan: 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, 2.6% + $0.30 on Grow, 2.4% + $0.30 on Advanced. The fixed $0.30 matters more than it looks on low-priced orders — it is an extra 3% effective rate on a $10 sale, 1% on a $30 sale.
On third-party gateways, Shopify adds an extra 2% (Basic) / 1% (Grow) / 0.6% (Advanced) / 0.2% (Plus) on top of whatever the gateway itself charges. Toggle between Shopify Payments and third-party to see the actual per-transaction cost under each setup.

FAQ
What is Shopify Payments?
Shopify's built-in payment processor, included free on all plans. It charges 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic (lower on higher plans). Using it avoids Shopify's third-party gateway surcharge.
What is the difference between Shopify Payments and a third-party gateway?
Shopify Payments is integrated and avoids the extra 2% (Basic) platform surcharge. Third-party gateways (Stripe, PayPal, etc.) add that surcharge on top of whatever they charge.
Why does the card rate vary by plan?
Lower-tier plans pay higher rates: Basic 2.9%, Grow 2.6%, Advanced 2.4%, plus $0.30 fixed on all. The rate difference is the trade-off for the lower monthly plan.
Is the $0.30 fixed fee negotiable?
No — it is part of Shopify Payments' published rates. Volume discounts are not advertised for the standard plans; Plus customers get custom rates.
How accurate are these rates?
Per Shopify's published rates, last checked 2026-11-02. Confirm on Shopify's official pricing page before making a pricing decision.
